(This is part
of a 365 project during my 70th year where I write and illustrate a blog on
each day's gift.)
A thumb presses on my plantar fascia and moves toward the metatarsals
and then the phalanges, first the hallux and then on down to the little pinky. Two
hands travel the map of my foot and it feels fantastic!
In January 2010, I had major surgery—my right knee was replaced.
After the surgery, for the first time ever in my life, I experienced
depression. I seemed to be unable to do anything at all except watch the winter
Olympics with little enthusiasm. I could not focus on reading, which I love,
and I was unable to write or create which is a passion. From the beginning, I
experienced loss of feeling on the bottom of my foot. After consultation with a
specialist, I was told that he didn’t know why my foot had very little feeling
but that I could have as many as three more surgeries, which might or might not
fix the problem. I decided that I could not deal with more surgery, especially
with the unfavorable predictions for improvement. The bottom of my foot and my
toes continue to lack feeling and I try to be careful with balance because of
this.
Often I crave to feel more in that part of my body and David
often gives me foot massages. Just having some extra pressure allows me to feel
a minimal amount more than usual. I believe there is a connection between the
foot and the rest of the body. Sometimes I notice that when pressure is applied
to one or another part of my foot, I feel a response elsewhere such as my arm,
back or head. Foot reflexology, which
originated in China, is based on the belief that each organ in the body
connects to a point on the foot.
Certainly, an hour-long foot massage by my very patient and
loving husband helps me relax and I believe my whole body feels better because
of it. My gift tonight and so many nights are long foot massages that connect
with the rest of my body and touch my spirit. I am indeed blessed.
My gift today (and often) is a long foot massage by my
husband.
